Chiropractic for Athletes in Okotoks
Why Is Chiropractic Care Important For Athletes?
Whether you are an amateur athlete or a professional, anyone who is involved in sports knows that bumps and bruises are a part of the sport, as well as the occasional injury. If these injuries go untreated, then further micro-traumas can cure and can lead to a chronic injury. This not only prolongs the pain, but will potentially keep you out of the sport for a longer period of time. Chiropractic care can provide many benefits to all athletes of all ages. It’s been shown that high-impact sports can place the same amount of strain on the body as an auto collision.
Experts estimate that 90% of professional athletes utilize chiropractic care on an ongoing basis to keep them at their best.”
How Can Chiropractic Help Athletes?
During an injury, chiropractic care can help reduce your pain, restore your range of motion, and most importantly, improve joint function and decrease the stress placed on your nerves.
When athletes get regularly adjusted, they may notice improved athletic performance, increased strength, improved range of motion, increase flexibility, increased blood flow, and can help prevent further injuries.
Playing sports puts the body through increased amounts of stress, thus placing more tension on the bones, muscles, nerves, and joints.
When you get a chiropractic adjustment, it will reduce the irritation of the nerve roots between the vertebrae of your back, this will improve healing times and help improve your performance.

Spinal Manipulative Therapy
When the spine is regularly adjusted it will have many beneficial effects on your body, such as decreased pain, improved range of motion, more energy, better sleep, increased strength, improved reaction time, improved mood, and you will feel less effects of stress on your body.
Extremity Manipulative Therapy
Chiropractors do not only adjust the spine. We can adjust any joint in your body, from your shoulder to your wrist, from your knee to your ankle. Sports put a lot of stress on your extremities, getting these adjusted can help restore proper function.
Extremity Manipulative Therapy
Muscle release therapy, is a great way to break up scar tissue that has formed due to repetitive strains to the muscle. For example, a baseball pitcher throws a ball multiple times per day. This creates little micro tears in the muscle. MRT can help break down the scar tissue that is formed when this happens to help restore it back to normal.
Graston Therapy
Much like MRT, Graston therapy breaks down scar tissue from repetitive strain. It uses an instrument to break down your body’s scar tissue. Your body is comprised of muscles, fascia, ligaments, and tendons. Injuries to these soft tissues play a significant role in the pain and dysfunction within the body. While it may not sound like a serious injury, a simple back muscle strain, a sprained ankle, or foot pain from running for example can cause excruciating pain and difficulty with movement. Graston therapy is an excellent treatment for repetitive and/or sport related injuries.
Postural Education
Form is everything when it comes to any sport, and it all starts with proper posture. A sport related repetitive strain injury is much more likely if one has improper form. We can show you where your posture is distorted and show you ways on how to correct it. This will not only help improve your form when being active, it will also reduce the chance of everyday aches and pain that one can get from improper posture.
Exercise Prescription
In addition to restoring proper joint function, we will also prescribe you the proper exercises to not only help you feel better faster, but to strengthen your core muscles which also will help reduce the likelihood of a future occurrence.
Rock Tape
Kinesio taping helps athletes and patients who are in a lot of pain by giving support and stability to your joints and muscles without affecting circulation and range of motion. Kinesio taping is a technique based on the body’s own natural healing process. ‘The Kinesio Taping Method’ is applied over muscles to reduce pain and inflammation, relax overused tired muscles, and to support muscles in movement on a 24hr/day basis. It is a non-restrictive type of taping which allows for full range of motion.
